33-year-old Sorana Cirstea beat Sofia Kenin in straight sets on Sunday to begin what could be a historic week for her in Dubai. The Romanian needs just three more wins to all-but guarantee an incredible first foray into the top 20, 11 years on from setting her career-high WTA world ranking of 21st, but it is a race against time as she nears the anniversary of her excellent Sunshine Double campaign last March. World number 19 Veronika Kudermetova overcame Dayana Yastremska in three topsy-turvy sets, handing the Ukrainian a bagel either side of a 1-6 second set, to snap a concerning four-match losing streak on tour.
