THE PREDICTION
This looks set to be a lengthy battle between world number 16 Tommy Paul and number 22 Francisco Cerundolo, with the pair sharing a tight 2-2 head-to-head record in which all four matches saw sets go both ways. 26-year-old Paul claimed their most recent meeting in three tight sets at the Canada Masters last August but Cerundolo won their two previous, both earlier last season, on grass in June, first at Queen’s and then to lift the Eastbourne International title. 25-year-old Cerundolo has struggled to find anything like last summer’s level so far this season but a straight-sets victory over in-form Fabian Marozsan on Friday was an excellent start to his Madrid campaign, whilst Paul needed three sets to overcome qualifier Lukas Klein. Consider the three-set option as a one-off here but otherwise back Cerundolo, the more comfortable on clay, to earn at least one of them to leave the result up to chance.
