THE LOWDOWN

TOMAS MARTIN ETCHEVERRY

World number 129 Tomas Martin Etcheverry came through the Australian Open qualifiers as the 12th seed to reach the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time. The 22-year-old Argentine spent almost all of last season on the Challenger circuit with two titles won on clay.

PABLO CARRENO BUSTA

World number 21 Pablo Carreno Busta helped take Spain all the way to the ATP Cup final in Sydney last week alongside Roberto Bautista Agut until defeats to Denis Shapovalov and Roberto Bautista Agut, respectively, in the final. The 30-year-old won his first ATP 500 title at the Hamburg Open on clay last year to make it six total ATP title now but his best Grand Slam showings came in semi-final exists at the US Open in 2017 and 2020.

THE PREDICTION

Tomas Martin Etcheverry looks set for a good career on tour, especially over the clay swings of the next few seasons, but on a hard court world number 21 Pablo Carreno Busta should simply be too powerful. The Spaniard has some making up to do after losing in the first round of the US Open last season to Maxime Cressy in a shock five-setter at his best tournament but this is a much kinder draw that he should be able to take in straight sets.
