THE LOWDOWN

TATJANA MARIA

World number 285 Tatjana Maria won the 2018 Mallorca Open on grass for her solo WTA tour title to date but she has a further four titles in Women’s Doubles. The 34-year-old’s best Grand Slam showing is a third round exit at Wimbledon in 2015.

MARIA SAKKARI

26-year-old Maria Sakkari is a big game player capable of consistent deep runs at top tournaments and that is why she is ranked at world number six despite winning just one WTA title to date. The Greek star reached two semi-finals last season, losing to the eventual champions of both Roland-Garros and the US Open in Barbora Krejcikova and Emma Raducanu, respectively. Sakkari has never made it past the round of 16 at the Australian Open but the conditions should suit her this season and a run to the semi-finals of the WTA Finals last November is promising.

THE PREDICTION

Former world number 46 Tatjana Maria will play her first tour-level match since the 2020 US Open here for a vastly winnable opening fixture against world number six Maria Sakkari. 26-year-old Sakkari will be aiming to avoid a first round exit in Melbourne as she suffered last season, with two semi-finals at Roland-Garros and the US Open much more like it. The Greek will take some stopping this time around and Tatjana Maria is unlikely to win more than a few service games here.
