THE LOWDOWN

Former world number four Sofia Kenin grabbed back-to-back wins, for only the second time this season, in Cleveland this week to suggest she could be on her way back to form. The current world number 415 has struggled with a myriad of problems over the last few seasons since winning the Australian Open in 2020 but at her best she is a top 10 player on tour. 23-year-old Jule Niemeier is also an anomaly at her current ranking of 108th after she reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon on her debut last month. With no ranking points to show for those exploits the German could be forgiven for feeling short-changed and she has managed just two wins on tour since.

THE PREDICTION

This is definitely a match to leave out of an accumulator as rising star Jule Niemeier takes on a former Grand Slam champion trying to return to the top. Kenin will be well-backed as a past and future star of American tennis, especially if she starts well as the Flushing Meadows crowd will be eager to encourage her through the tougher moments. Both players are hard to pin down right now but Kenin has been competitive in most of her recent defeats and backing her to win at least a set looks the sensible way out of calling a victor.
