THE LOWDOWN

SEBASTIAN KORDA

World number 43 Sebastian Korda overcame the unique experience of French wind-up merchant Corentin Moutet in a thrilling fifth set tiebreak on Wednesday to reach the third round of the Australian Open on his main draw debut in Melbourne. The talented young American should not have come that close to defeat, though, but it will hopefully dial him in more to the challenge at hand. 21-year-old Korda reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon last season for a best Grand Slam showing yet but he has a ways to go before emulating his father, 1998 Australian Open Petr Korda.

PABLO CARRENO BUSTA

World number 21 Pablo Carreno Busta came out the eventual winner of a five-set marathon match with in-form Tallon Griekspoor on Wednesday, taking the first, third and deciding set in a high-quality encounter. The 30-year-old is a two-time Grand Slam semi-finalist at the US Open but he has never gone further than the round of 16 at the Australian Open.

THE PREDICTION

With five second round sets in the legs of both players here the stage is set for a fair fight to find the fittest of the two. There are more questions than answers in this first meeting between two top players but early season form suggests Pablo Carreno Busta can find a way through to the round of 16 eventually, especially if Sebastian Korda gives him as many chances as he did Moutet. The American will likely exceed PCB’s career-high world number 10 over the next few years but at this moment in time the Spaniard is a consummate professional with plenty of experience coming through these tough tests at majors. Take PCB to win outright here.
