THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki faces former number five Sara Errani in a throwback fixture that should draw a nostalgic crowd in Madrid. 33-year-old Wozniacki leads their head-to-head 4-1 with victories in each of their last three matches, although the pair are far from the players who last met in 2018 when Wozniacki came back from a set down to win in Istanbul. The Dane enjoyed a brilliant initial comeback from retirement last summer, reaching the round of 16 at the US Open before losing to eventual champion Coco Gauff, and she turned a poor start to 2024 around with a searing run to the quarter-finals at Indian Wells last month to near a return to the top 100.
36-year-old Errani is currently ranked 100th exactly after enjoying a surprise spell on the main tour in recent months, with a run to the semi-finals of the Bogota Open earlier this month ended by eventual champion Camila Osorio. The Italian beat Anna Kalinskaya in Stuttgart qualifying last week and she has earned her place in Madrid the hard way this week to bring some promising clay form into this intriguing clash. Consider taking Errani to earn at least a set as a one-off but otherwise back Wozniacki to make it through.
TIP: CAROLINE WOZNIACKI TO WIN
