THE PREDICTION

Whilst world number one Iga Swiatek is the clear favourite to, probably, blast Poland 1-0 up in the United Cup final there is a slight chance that we could enjoy the most exciting match of 2024 between two vastly different playstyles. Former number one Kerber claimed her first win since her comeback from maternity leave on Saturday, coming back from a set down to stun Ajla Tomljanovic before Germany sprang a surprise 15-13 deciding victory in the doubles to knock out hosts Australia. The 35-year-old has impressed this week despite losing her first three matches but even at full strength it would be a surprise to see her cope with Swiatek’s peak powers. Swiatek dropped her first set of the campaign against an initially inspired Caroline Garcia on Saturday before conceding just two more games in a fierce comeback and she should be better for that scare.

The Pole knows that the tie rests almost squarely on her shoulders in this opening clash, with Hubert Hurkacz facing a tall order against Alexander Zverev in the second, and she should have more than enough to take it in straight sets. Swiatek’s punch versus Kerber’s renowned counter-punch could offer plenty of highlights before the result.

TIP: IGA SWIATEK TO WIN 2-0
