THE PREDICTION

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams won the US Open in back-to-back seasons in 2000 and 2001, complementing her first and third major titles at Wimbledon earlier those summers. The 43-year-old is a legend of the sport and currently an utter marvel after her incredible result over Veronika Kudermetova last week in Cincinnati became her first top 20 win since 2019. The current world number 407 will be backed to the hilt by an adoring, partisan crowd against former world number two Paula Badosa and she stands the slightest chance at another huge upset against the out-of-sorts Spaniard. World number 46 Badosa reached the quarter-finals of the Rome Masters back in May to look like finally coming back into form but she suffered another injury setback in the second round of Wimbledon early last month and this will be her first match back on tour.

Badosa was born in New York but home-from-home advantage has yet to benefit her, with a 2-4 record so far at Flushing Meadows further suggesting a huge moment could be upon us. At her best, and not even at her best, Badosa should be coming through this match in straight sets but the potentially shrewd, potentially sentimental, move could be taking Williams to earn at least a set.

Paula Badosa has withdrawn from the US Open. Take Venus Williams to beat Greet Minnen outright.
