THE PREDICTION

World number 51 Anna Blinkova won her maiden WTA title here at Cluj-Napoca in late 2022 and she should be considered a decent contender for a second this week in a pretty sparse field. The 25-year-old made history at the Australian Open last month by winning the longest tiebreak ever played at a Grand Slam, 22-20, to stun 2023 runner-up Elena Rybakina in the second round but she then failed to capitalise with a third round exit to Jasmine Paolini. Blinkova snapped a two-match losing streak with a consummate opener over Simone Waltert on Monday and she should be better for it in this tough scrap with Nuria Parrizas-Diaz, who beat her comfortably on clay in their first encounter in Madrid last spring. 32-year-old Parrizas-Diaz enjoyed a couple of seasons on the main tour but she has slipped back to world number 132 after a drab 2023. The Spaniard started this year well with victory at the Canberra Challenger, though, and het straight-sets victory over in-form Laura Siegemund on Monday should not be underestimated. Back Blinkova to come through on experience on this court but consider taking the Russian to earn at least a set inside an accumulator.

TIP: ANNA BLINKOVA TO WIN
