THE PREDICTION

Both Botic van de Zandschulp and Nicolas Moreno De Alboran qualified well this week to earn their places in the main draw at the Italian Open, with Van de Zandschulp particularly impressing. The 28-year-old is far better than his current deflated ranking suggests, with a career-high of 21st set in late 2022, but he has been leaking confidence practically ever since losing to Holger Rune for an agonising second Munich Open final in a row last April and there is little sign of a return any time soon.

26-year-old Moreno De Alboran reached the quarter-finals of a Challenger event in Rome last week to gain some solid experience in the city and he impressed with in a run to the quarter-finals of the Marrakech Open last month, beating Buenos Aires champion Facundo Diaz Acosta as well as former Marrakech champion David Goffin. The sensible move would be leaving this match alone altogether but otherwise consider backing the American to earn at least a set with the better recent form on clay.
