THE LOWDOWN

World number 10 Holger Rune looked in excellent shape in a straight-sets victory over Filip Krajinovic on Tuesday. The 19-year-old enjoyed a totally transformative season last year with a maiden ATP title on clay at the Munich Open, first announcing himself on the world stage by stunning Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets to reach the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros. However, it was the Dane’s sudden form on hardcourts later in the year that brought him into the top 10 here – beating Tsitsipas once again to win the Stockholm Open before an incredible victory over Novak Djokovic at the Paris Masters.

THE PREDICTION

This match looks a reasonable candidate for five sets between ninth seed Holger Rune and world number 41 Maxime Cressy, who reached the round of 16 here in Melbourne last season. 25-year-old Cressy beat Albert Ramos-Vinolas in four sets on Tuesday for a first win of 2023 and the serve-and-volley throwback clearly enjoys the conditions – and extra sets – of a Grand Slam with wins over John Isner, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Pablo Carreno Busta within the last two years. Cressy is a tough player to meet for the first time on tour but Rune has time-and-again made a mockery of being underestimated. Back the Dane to win at least two sets as the likelier of two capable victors for a cautious move but add at least a tiebreak for value – often a factor of Cressy’s matches.
