THE PREDICTION
World number 40 Matteo Arnaldi backed up an excellent upset of eighth seed Sebastian Baez on Tuesday with a consummate victory over another Argentine in Marco Trungelliti yesterday. The 23-year-old helped Italy to a historic Davis Cup win late last season, on hardcourts in Seville, and he has continued that form on the surface early this season before seemingly transferring well to clay here in Barcelona. Arnaldi stunned world number six Casper Ruud in straight sets almost a year ago at the Madrid Masters but he will face a much tougher version of the rejuvenated Norwegian this tine around. 25-year-old Ruud finished runner-up to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Monte-Carlo Masters last weekend, beating world number one Novak Djokovic for the first time in the semi-finals, and he has reacted well so far in Barcelona with two handy straight-set wins. Three sets seem about as likely as two here but back Ruud to level their head-to-head to reach the semi-finals.
