THE PREDICTION

World number two Aryna Sabalenka won her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open back in January, coming back from a set down to Elena Rybakina, and she should be considered one of at least four title contenders here in New York. The 25-year-old has reached the semi-finals of the US Open in each of the last two editions and she has made at least the last four in each of her last four Grand Slams, with exits to Karolina Muchova and Ons Jabeur at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon this year, respectively. Sabalenka lost to eventual champion Swiatek in the semi-finals here last season but recent defeats to Ons Jabeur, Liudmila Samsonova and a second this summer to Muchova in Cincinnati last week suggest she is vulnerable to attacks from outside the current top four. World number 115 Maryna Zanevska brings a six-match losing streak into this horrid draw against the second seed. The Belgian would far prefer this match take place on her favoured clay but Sabalenka should be coming through this match in fewer than 17.5 games in conditions that suit her best.
