THE PREDICTION

20-year-old Maria Timofeeva will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 118th after coming back from a set down to stun former champion Caroline Wozniacki on Wednesday. The Russian burst onto the scene with a maiden title claimed on her tour debut at the Hungarian Open last summer and she is proving to be yet another rising young star with this brilliant run to the third round of the Australian Open on her Grand Slam debut. World number 12 Beatriz Haddad-Maia should be too hot to handle, though, after ousting two teenagers already this week.

The 27-year-old conceded just three games to 16-year-old Alina Korneeva on Wednesday to back-up a choppier three-setter over 18-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova in the first round, starting 2024 in similar form to how she left 2023 as the WTA Elite Trophy champion in singles and doubles. Haddad-Maia made the semi-finals at Roland-Garros last summer to prove her grit at this level and she can be backed to end Timofeeva’s run in straight sets.

TIP: BEATRIZ HADDAD-MAIA TO WIN 2-0
