THE LOWDOWN

MARIA SAKKARI

26-year-old Maria Sakkari is up to her career-high WTA world ranking of sixth after some strong form this season. The Greek has lost to the winner of her last two tournaments after finishing runner-up to Anett Kontaveit at the St. Petersburg Open and losing in the semi-finals of the Qatar Masters to Iga Swiatek. Sakkari also lost in the semi-finals of two Grand Slams last season to eventual champions in the shape of Barbora Krejcikova at Roland-Garros and Emma Raducanu at the US Open.

KATERINA SINIAKOVA

25-year-old Katerina Siniakova beat Irina-Camelia Begu in three sets on Thursday to reach the second round of Indian Wells for a fifth time. The world number 55 won two WTA titles back in 2017 at the Shenzhen Open and Bastad Open and she finished runner-up to Angelique Kerber at the Bad Homburg Open last summer.

THE PREDICTION

Maria Sakkari beat Katerina Siniakova in straight sets at this stage of the US Open last season to level their head-to-head record at a intriguing 2-2. Siniakova had won the previous two meetings via three-set marathon matches at the Australian Open in 2018 and Roland-Garros a year later, with Sakkari completing their Grand Slam set by winning their first meeting at Wimbledon in 2017. At this moment in time the Greek is a much more powerful player but Siniakova is clearly well capable of forcing a decider. Take Sakkari to win outright here for a suitably cautious move.
