THE LOWDOWN

MACKENZIE MCDONALD

26-year-old Mackenzie McDonald would match his career-high ATP world ranking of 49th with one more win at the Miami Open after some seriously impressive results so far. The American came back from a set down to beat Dominik Koepfer on Wednesday but a straight-sets victory over former world number three Grigor Dimitrov is one of the best of his career so far. McDonald reached a first tour final last season, losing to Jannik Sinner at the Washington Open.

ALEXANDER ZVEREV

World number four Alexander Zverev overcame a tough challenge against the returning Borna Coric on Friday, beating the former world number 12 in three sets. 24-year-old Zverev has struggled so far this season to live up to last year’s career-best title haul in which he added two more Masters titles and a second WTA Finals crown to his total of 20. The German also won Gold at the Tokyo Olympic Games after ending Novak Djokovic’s hunt for a Golden Slam in the semi-finals.

THE PREDICTION

There is more than just the hint of an upset about this possible thriller late on Sunday night. World number four Alexander Zverev upset a lot of people with his aggressive assault on an umpire’s chair at the Mexican Open last month, an action that saw him disqualified and fined, and he has since looked jaded in a three-set loss to Tommy Paul at Indian Wells and again here against Borna Coric on Friday. Mackenzie McDonald is the perfect candidate to play the American underdog under the stadium lights on Sunday night and backing him to utilise a partisan atmosphere to win at least a set is a tempting option here. Zverev has not taken kindly to crowd pressure in the past but he remains the favourite to find a way through after a recent straight-sets victory over McDonald made it 2-0n in their head-to-head record.
