World number 91 Varvara Gracheva qualified handily this week to look ready to repair her season, with a seven-match losing streak snapped at the Charleston Open earlier this month. The 23-year-old is a solid all-court threat but she has mostly impressed on clay so far, with two wins from four on the surface this month, and tight exits to Elise Mertens and Yue Yuan, looking like improving form. World number 46 Lucia Bronzetti is one of the streakier players on tour but certainly at her best in these conditions, winning her maiden WTA title at the Rabat Open in Morocco last summer. The Italian enjoyed a strong run to the third round of Indian Wells last month but she has largely struggled to find any sort of consistency so far in 2024. Leave this match far from an accumulator, with both players desperately seeking better form, but back Gracheva to earn at least a set on her momentum from qualifying.
