World number 68 Lesia Tsurenko played well to reach the third round of the Madrid Open last week and she could have gone further had she not drawn eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka. The 33-year-old has been enjoying some excellent form over the last 12 months or so, particularly on the ‘natural’ surfaces, and she should have more than enough to navigate this tough opener with her compatriot Elina Svitolina. Former world number three Svitolina won two of her three Masters titles here in 2017 and 2018 but she is making the long journey back from maternity leave this time around. Whilst she is yet to win a tour-level match this season a run to the semi-finals of a Challenger event last week will certainly see her improved on her efforts in Madrid two weeks ago. Svitolina beat Tsurenko in straight sets at her peak in 2017 but at this moment in time Tsurenko can be backed to come through outright.
