THE PREDICTION

World number 20 Karolina Pliskova conceded just three games to Isabella Shinikova in the first round, just missing out a bye to the round of 16 as the sixth seed in Tokyo. The 30-year-old recently burst back into form on her favoured hardcourts, reaching the semi-finals of the Canada Masters before an excellent run to the quarter-finals at the US Open was thwarted by Aryna Sabalenka and she will be targeting nothing less than the title here. 31-year-old Petra Martic conceded one fewer game in her first round match with Rina Saigo to get her Tokyo campaign underway and she too enjoyed a solid run in New York, stunning the fourth seed Paula Badosa before losing to Victoria Azarenka in the third round. The pair share a head-to-head record finely poised at 3-3 at tour level, with Pliskova winning each of their last two meetings as well as both of their matches on a hardcourt. Back the Czech to win outright in what could end up a proper thriller.
