THE LOWDOWN

KAREN KHACHANOV

World number 26 Karen Khachanov won the most recent of his four career ATP title at the Paris Masters in 2018. The former world number eight has struggled to break into the latter stages of tournaments since then, although he claimed a Silver Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games last summer and finished runner-up at the start of this season to Gael Monfils.

JENSON BROOKSBY

21-year-old Jenson Brooksby conceded just five games to Roberto Carballes Baena on Thursday to reach the second round of Indian Wells for successive seasons. Brooksby is one of the most exciting young players on tour right now and he will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 41st no matter the outcome here.

THE PREDICTION

Jenson Brooksby should shine under the lights in this likely thrilling late night match on Saturday. The 21-year-old took Alexander Zverev to three sets here back in October, at this same stage of the tournament, and he came closer still to beating the German at the Mexican Open last month in the latest-ever tennis match that finished well after 5AM local time. World number 26 Karen Khachanov should still be considered the favourite here on experience over three sets but backing the American to win at least one of them is a decent compromise. Brooksby has all the ability to win through here but much of this match will rest on what version of the Russian turns up for this first meeting.
