29-year-old Jordan Thompson claimed one of the biggest wins of his career on Friday, ousting top seed Alexander Zverev in three tight sets to reach a third tour final. The Aussie will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 36th as he continues to enjoy the best, most consistent form of his career but this looks a really tough task against world number 12 Casper Ruud. 25-year-old Ruud beat defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets on Friday to look assured in his new approach to hardcourt tennis and his 10 career ATP 250 titles hand him the experience to wait Thompson out here - with the Aussie spending an absurd 10 hours on court to Ruud’s four this week in Los Cabos. Ruud leads their tour-level head-to-head 2-1 but it is notable that their two Grand Slam clashes went to five sets, with Thompson winning their most recent encounter in five at Wimbledon three years ago. Thompson has lost both of his previous finals but Ruud’s 10-8 record at this stage of a tournament is not exactly rock solid. The Norwegian has the experience, and energy, to outlast Thompson here but three sets seem likelier than two.
