World number 63 Adrian Mannarino beat Steve Johnson in straight sets to get his Dallas Open campaign underway, with his most recent of two ATP titles coming on US soil last season at the Winston-Salem Open. The 34-year-old will fancy his chances at making the quarter-finals against world number 84 Jordan Thompson with a 3-1 lead over the Aussie in their head-to-head record – the most recent of which saw him lift his first title at ‘s-Hertogenbosch back in 2019. 28-year-old Thompson grabbed his first win of the season against Denis Kudla in the first round and he was competitive in a four-set defeat to J.J Wolf at the Australian Open three weeks ago. This match is a bit of a toss-up between two hard-grafters but back Mannarino to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable quarter-finalists at this level.
