THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Maria Carle will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 71st after claiming a huge upset over 17th seed Veronika Kudermetova on Thursday, backing-up an excellent opening shock win over Emma Raducanu. The 24-year-old won a Challenger title on clay earlier this month to bring some excellent form into Madrid, where she qualified without dropping a set to make her debut. World number 10 Jelena Ostapenko has already beaten one qualifier in Jessica Bouzas Maneiro but she will have to find some, currently elusive apparently, consistency to avoid an upset here. The 26-year-old enjoyed a searing start to 2024, picking up two WTA titles in Adelaide and Linz, but she has lost three of her last five matches ahead of this first encounter with Carle. The Argentine will be backed to the hilt as a severe underdog but Ostapenko is well-versed in playing the villain. It is tempting to take Carle to win at least a set here on momentum but the suitably cautious option is taking Ostapenko to find a way through.
