THE PREDICTION

This should be a fascinating encounter between world number 10 Jannik Sinner and number 11 Hubert Hurkacz, with both youngsters set to dip in and out of an ever-improving top 10 on the ATP tour. 20-year-old Sinner is the man in better recent form, with his loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open his only defeat this season for a hugely encouraging 9-1 record in 2022 so far. His latest victory came in a well-contested battle with Andy Murray on Wednesday in which he started slowly for the second match in a row at the Dubai Tennis Championships before improving to win well. That could leave an early door open for 25-year-old Hurkacz, who has blitzed past Alexander Bublik and Alex Molcan so far to reach the quarter-finals without dropping a set.

The Pole has been found wanting against the likes of Adrian Mannarino and Lorenzo Musetti so far this season but it only takes a few stellar performances for him to rediscover his best form. Hurkacz beat Sinner almost a year ago to win his first Masters title at the Miami Open but the Italian levelled things up with a straight-sets dismissal at last November’s ATP Finals. At this moment in time the Italian is the more in form and more likely to come through the outright winner but it would not be a surprise to see Hurkacz take the first set.
