THE PREDICTION

Defending champion Hubert Hurkacz set a new career-high ATP world ranking of eighth after a strong run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open was ended in five gruelling sets by eventual champion Daniil Medvedev. The Pole struggled for consistent form for much of last season but he eventually found his groove on the late hardcourt swing, winning a second Masters title at the Shanghai Open before finishing runner-up to Felix Auger-Aliassime in Basel to just miss out on ATP Finals qualification. World number 56 Alexander Shevchenko enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season last year, enjoying deep runs in Madrid and Basel before finishing runner-up to Ugo Humbert at the Moselle Open. The Kazakh took the first set before defeat to eventual champion Alexander Bublik in the quarter-finals of the Montpellier Open last week and he should pose a strong threat in similar conditions here, particularly as Hurkacz has not played since Melbourne.

Shevchenko beat Benjamin Bonzi, whom Hurkacz beat to the title here last season, to make the round of 16 and he took Hurkacz to three sets before defeat in Dubai this time last year. Back Hurkacz to win outright here, with three sets likelier than two.

TIP: HUBERT HURKACZ TO WIN
