THE PREDICTION

World number seven Andrey Rublev beat Ugo Humbert in surprisingly comfortable fashion on Friday, avenging a three-set defeat to the Frenchman in Beijing two weeks ago. The 25-year-old broke his Masters duck at the Monte-Carlo Open back in in April and he suddenly looks the unlikely title favourite here following a spotless run so far in Shanghai as the highest-remaining seed. World number 19 Grigor Dimitrov certainly has the ability to win this potential thriller but the Bulgarian is the less dependable performer of the two. The 32-year-old stunned Carlos Alcaraz from a set down in the round of 16 to claim his highest ranking win since beating then world number two Daniil Medvedev at Indian Wells two years ago. The pair share a finely-poised 3-3 head-to-head record that gives little away, particularly as all six meetings have come on hardcourts, so back Rublev to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance. Rublev beat Dimitrov in straight sets in their only previous encounter in China at the 2019 Beijing Open.
