THE PREDICTION

This should prove a thrilling day’s play in Perth as Australia aim to avenge their tight defeat to Great Britain at the Davis Cup group stages in Manchester, UK, back in September. World number 12 Alex de Minaur will have to shoulder most of the expectation here as Ajla Tomjlanovic played just three times in 2023 but he is arguably at his best in these conditions. The 24-year-old enjoyed a career-best year in 2023, winning a first ATP 500 title at the Mexican Open in February and going on to reach three more finals, losing at Queen’s to Carlos Alcaraz and in his first Masters final to Jannik Sinner in Toronto. World number 18 Cam Norrie endured a tough 2023, with previous marathon seasons seemingly catching up with him around the spring. The 28-year-old still managed to claim his fifth ATP title at the Rio 500, beating Alcaraz to do so, but he has failed to beat a player ranked inside the top 100 since the first round of the US Open last September.

Norrie did beat De Minaur at this stage of the United Cup last season but the Aussie leads their head-to-head 2-1 after a strong straight-sets result en-route to the final in Toronto. With home advantage behind him and a much-needed rest, take De Minaur to start what should be his best season yet with a bang.

TIP: ALEX DE MINAUR TO WIN
