THE PREDICTION

World number 18 Frances Tiafoe has a serious point to prove on the Sunshine Double this month after a concerning patch of poor form that stretches back to his gut-wrenching five-set defeat to Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals of the US Open last summer. The 26-year-old has won back-to-back matches just twice since New York, and one of those runs was due in large part to Dan Evans’ serious calf injury in Tokyo, and a recent split with coach Wayne Ferreira suggests he is scrambling for answers.

World number 56 Dusan Lajovic is always capable of causing an upset or two despite fluctuating form over the past few seasons and he comes in hot from an impressive straight-sets victory over Emil Ruusuvuori, whom tends to perform well at this time of the year. The Serb trails Tiafoe 1-4 in their head-to-head record but it is at least interesting that his sole victory over the American came in the first round here back in 2017. Tiafoe has won each of the last four to look a reasonable favourite but he is currently far from the player he wants to be on court. Two of their last three encounters saw sets go to Lajovic so consider that option to leave the victor up to chance here.

TIP: DUSAN LAJOVIC TO WIN A SET
