THE PREDICTION

World number nine Felix Auger-Aliassime blasted past in-form Alex de Minaur in straight sets on Wednesday to once again suggest a deep run is in the offing. The 22-year-old looked exceptional at the Canada Masters last week until a drubbing by Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals, with plenty of room left for more consistency in his game. The Canadian has all the tools required to go out and win the US Open later this month, with a semi-final loss to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev last season and a five-set defeat to the Russian in the Australian Open quarter-finals this year proof of his quality but he is still improving all the time. World number 12 Jannik Sinner is in a similar boat after recently stunning Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon before a five-set defeat to Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals. The Italian was in control of a well-contested match with Miomir Kecmanovic on Wednesday before the Serb retired from the second set but he lost badly to Auger-Aliassime at this stage of the Madrid Masters back in May to make this second meeting a real head-scratcher.

A hardcourt probably just-about favours Auger-Aliassime but taking the Canadian to win at least a set seems the suitably cautious pick here.
