World number 28 Jan-Lennard Struff beat Botic van de Zandschulp, two-time runner-up here in Munich, in convincing straight sets on Thursday but he will have to improve to halt Auger-Aliassime’s burgeoning resurgence. The 34-year-old finished runner-up here in 2021 and twice more last season in Stuttgart, and remarkably to Carlos Alcaraz at the Madrid Masters, to suggest he is getting closer to that elusive maiden title. Home advantage should come to his aid in this likely lengthy battle with a fellow heavy hitter but Auger-Aliassime leads their head-to-head 2-1 having won each of their last two encounters.
