THE PREDICTION

World number 34 Felix Auger-Aliassime impressed on his weakest surface on Thursday, putting a choppy three-set opener over Maximilian Marterer behind him with an assured straight-sets result over Taro Daniel. The 23-year-old has struggled to find anything like his best form, as a former number six this time last season, for much of the past 12 months but it should not take too long for him to bounce back with all the tools required of a mainstay top 10 star.

World number 28 Jan-Lennard Struff beat Botic van de Zandschulp, two-time runner-up here in Munich, in convincing straight sets on Thursday but he will have to improve to halt Auger-Aliassime’s burgeoning resurgence. The 34-year-old finished runner-up here in 2021 and twice more last season in Stuttgart, and remarkably to Carlos Alcaraz at the Madrid Masters, to suggest he is getting closer to that elusive maiden title. Home advantage should come to his aid in this likely lengthy battle with a fellow heavy hitter but Auger-Aliassime leads their head-to-head 2-1 having won each of their last two encounters. Take Struff to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.

TIP: JAN-LENNARD STRUFF TO WIN A SET
