THE PREDICTION

19-year-old Ashlyn Krueger could set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 68th after beating Nao Hibino in straight sets on Wednesday, building on her impressive start to the clay swing in Charleston. The American claimed her maiden WTA title at the Osaka Open late last season, on hardcourt, but she took eventual runner-up Daria Kasatkina to three sets on Charleston’s green clay earlier this month before winning the Women’s Doubles alongside Sloane Stephens.

World number 16 Ekaterina Alexandrova reached the semi-finals of the Miami Open this time last month, stunning world number one Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula before coming unstuck against eventual champion Danielle Collins’ unstoppable run, and two defeats on clay since see her bring a rather understandable losing streak into Madrid. The 29-year-old is a solid all-court threat at her best but clay is certainly her least effective surface, although the high altitude in Madrid should aid her powerful groundstrokes. Back the Russian to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.

TIP: EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA TO WIN A SET
