World number 11 Daria Kasatkina has twice finished runner-up at WTA 500 events this season, to Jelena Ostapenko in Adelaide and to Elena Rybakina in Abu Dhabi, as she enjoys a welcome return to form after a poor 2023. The 26-year-old claimed her most recent of six WTA titles at the San Jose Open in 2022 but she was a Masters finalist at Indian Wells in 2018 to prove her credentials at this level and she tends to enjoy this spring period of the season, with some memorable runs in Rome and Roland-Garros in recent years.
World number 114 Claire Liu upset Petra Martic in straight sets on Wednesday to win her first tour-level match of the season on Wednesday, with her last coming in mid-October in Tunisia. The 23-year-old is capable of much better tennis than her current ranking suggests but Kasatkina can usually be counted upon to play to her seeding to suggest this is a winnable opening fixture for the Russian. Liu stands a chance at a famous day with the momentum from qualifying and partisan home backing, though, so take the cautious outright approach.
