THE PREDICTION

World number three Daniil Medvedev coped very well with having to return to his second round match with Adrian Mannarino the following day after the curfew on Thursday, seeing out the Frenchman in straight sets to avenge a loss in three at the Libema Open last month. The 27-year-old has never reached the quarter-finals here at Wimbledon but he is looking more and more like a dark horse with each passing round. The four-time Grand Slam finalist claimed his only major title against Novak Djokovic at the US Open in 2021 to spoil the Serb’s calendar slam attempt and he could well be the Serb’s biggest threat here at SW19, although Carlos Alcaraz is improving all the time. This is a tough fixture for Medvedev, though, against world number 67 Marton Fucsovics. The 31-year-old reached the quarter-finals here two years ago before defeat to Djokovic and he tested the Serb valiantly at Roland-Garros earlier this summer. A run to the Stuttgart Open semi-finals is proof of his credentials on this surface and he comes battle-hardened after seeing off in-form Tallon Griekspoor and the tireless Marcos Giron in four on Thursday.

Medvedev leads the Hungarian 2-1 in their head-to-head but Fucsovics took their most recent encounter at Roland-Garros three years ago in four sets. Back Medvedev to win outright here as four sets seem likely and five a possibility.
