18-year-old Coco Gauff can break the WTA top 10 for a first time if she reaches the semi-finals of the Canada Masters, and her last two performances suggest she could go all the way. The current world number 11 came through the longest match of her career on Thursday, beating Aryna Sabalenka in over three hours, and before that put in one of her best performances yet to oust the Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in similarly tight circumstances. World number 15 Simona Halep has enjoyed her time in a much kinder portion of the draw to the rest of the last eight but she has still come through impressively without yet dropping a set, ousting in-form Jil Teichmann on Thursday. The former world number one is a two-time Canada Masters champion from 2-16 and 2018, although both of those editions came in Montreal, and she leads Gauff 3-0 in their head-to-head without yet dropping a set to the teenager.
Halep has beaten Gauff twice this season, at Indian Wells and the Madrid Open, and yet the American’s star has started rising even faster than before over the last few months. Given her record against the Romanian, the sensible pick looks to be backing Halep to win outright here. However, taking Gauff to win her first set from Halep could prove the shrewd move whilst also avoiding a tricky result.
