THE PREDICTION
World number five Casper Ruud finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz in four sets here last summer but he looks some way off of that level after a four-set victory could easily have seen a decider against qualifier Emilio Nava. The 24-year-old has reached three Grand Slam finals in the past two seasons after doing so twice at Roland-Garros and yet there is a nagging sense that an upset is never far away, with this a considerable challenge against Zhizhen Zhang. World number 67 Zhang has played at a level far higher in parts of this season, with a run to the Madrid Masters quarter-finals his most impressive to date, and he overcame J.J. Wolf in five sets on Monday to look ready for the battle. Ruud needed four sets to beat the Chinese in the third round of Roland-Garros in June and it would be a slight surprise to see him come through in three here. Take Ruud to win outright with four or even five sets a distinct possibility, making a one-off on Zhang to earn at least one the potentially shrewd move.
