THE PREDICTION

19-year-old Linda Noskova set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 28th after a fabulous first run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open last month, where she stunned top seed Iga Swiatek from a set down to blow the draw wide open. The Czech lost to Sara Sorribes Tormo in three sets in Abu Dhabi last week but she should be improved here to look the favourite in this first encounter with Bernarda Pera. World number 83 Pera set a career-high of 27th last summer, after winning back-to-back WTA titles on her favoured clay the season before, but she has struggled to find anything like those heights since. The 29-year-old has qualified handily here in Doha, though, to look a considerable threat to Noskova’s currently unquantifiable level and that momentum could serve her well. Back Noskova to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors to leave the result up to chance.

TIP: LINDA NOSKOVA TO WIN A SET
