THE PREDICTION

24-year-old Liudmila Samsonova came into the Abu Dhabi Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of 19th built largely upon her excellent form late last year, where she won three WTA titles on hardcourts in Washington, Cleveland and Tokyo. The Russian avoided an upset early-on here with a comeback victory over Claire Liu that ended in relative comfort but she will need to be better against former world number two Barbora Krejcikova in this first meeting between the two. Current world number 30 Krejcikova is coming off another Grand Slam winning campaign alongside Katerina Siniakova at the Australian Open but she also impressed in the singles, reaching the round of 16 before a creditable defeat to Jessica Pegula. Krejcikova won back-to-back titles last season in Tallinn and Ostrava and the oft-underestimated Czech should be considered a feasible title contender this week. Samsonova has every chance at winning this but back Krejcikova to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier quarter-finalist.
