THE PREDICTION

30-year-old Ajla Tomljanovic was offered a comfortable closer in Australia’s shock 3-0 victory over Serbia in the quarter-finals, with Alex de Minaur setting the tone for the tie with an incredible result over an injured Novak Djokovic. Tomljanovic conceded just two games to back-up option Nina Stevanovic in the second match to seal the tie and that should boost her confidence as she continues her return from injury. Former world number one Angelique Kerber is in a similar position, with this week seeing her first matches back on tour since Wimbledon in 2022, but the new mother has not looked out of place so far.

A consummate defeat to Maria Sakkari on Friday was to be expected but Kerber came very close indeed to upsetting Caroline Garcia in Germany’s tight 2-1 defeat to France and she has impressed in a makeshift doubles duo alongside Alexander Zverev. This is a tough call between two players with little recent form but back Kerber to win at least a set having not yet dropped one to Tomljanovic in a 3-0 head-to-head record.

TIP: ANGELIQUE KERBER TO WIN A SET
