THE PREDICTION

World number eight Jessica Pegula conceded just four games to Viktorija Golubic on Tuesday to get a promising US Open campaign underway. The 28-year-old US number one has once again been drawn in the same portion of the tournament as world number one Iga Swiatek, who has ousted her from two deep runs at the Miami Open and Roland-Garros this season, but she may never have a better opportunity to beat the Pole than in these conditions on her favourite surface in front of home fans. Pegula has lost to the eventual champion of two Grand Slams this season, Ash Barty at the Australian Open and Swiatek in Paris, to suggest she will need a top 10 player to oust her in New York.

World number 32 Aliaksandra Sasnovich is in solid form this season after reaching her second tour final of the year in Cleveland last week but the Belarussian should come off second-best in this first meeting. Sasnovich, also 28, reached the round of 16 this season at Roland-Garros but she has never made it past the third round in Melbourne or New York. Three sets is a distinct possibility here, and it is worth backing Pegula outright inside an accumulator, but the American should be able to edge this in two.
