THE PREDICTION

World number 19 Alexander Zverev looks the clear favourite to lift the Hamburg 500 title for the first time on home clay after a spotless run to the final was completed with a straight-sets victory over rising star Arthur Fils. The 26-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of second last summer but a serious foot injury suffered in the semi-finals at Roland-Garros ended his season early, with this his first final on tour since defeat to Carlos Alcaraz at the Madrid Masters last May. Six of the German’s 19 ATP titles have come on clay, including two on home soil in Munich, but he faces a tough competitor on the surface in Laslo Djere, who dominated Zhizhen Zhang on Saturday to look very competitive indeed. 28-year-old Djere claimed both of his ATP titles on clay in 2018 and 2019, including at 500 level in Rio, and he has blazed a trail this week in Hamburg with impressive wins including over defending champion Lorenzo Musetti. Zverev remains the favourite with home advantage and a healthy 2-0 lead in their head-to-head but it would not be a surprise to see this go to three. Back the German to win outright or consider taking at least a tiebreak instead.
