THE LOWDOWN

ALEXANDER ZVEREV

World number three Alexander Zverev beat Spanish qualifier Bernabe Zapata Miralles in straight sets on Sunday but it will have felt like four against a spirited opponent who pushed him all the way. The 25-year-old reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last season before losing in five sets to eventual runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas and also took Novak Djokovic to five before defeat at this stage of the US Open. Zverev enjoyed his best season on tour last year, winning a Gold Medal, the ATP Finals and four other titles including the Madrid Open on clay.

CARLOS ALCARAZ

World number six Carlos Alcaraz was in control of his round of 16 clash with Karem Khachanov on Sunday, conceding just nine games to the Russian. The 19-year-old is riding a 14-match winning streak into the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros after back-to-back titles won on clay at the Barcelona Open and Madrid Open, the latter of which he thrashed defending champion Alexander Zverev in the final. Alcaraz is yet to reach the semi-finals of a Grand Slam after suffering injury against Felix Auger-Aliassime at this stage of the US Open last September.

THE PREDICTION

There is plenty of extra edge to this match for world number three Alexander Zverev, who seems more put off by the meteoric rise of wunderkind Carlos Alcaraz. Perhaps because Zverev, now 25 years old, was the last male player to blossom in this way on tour as a breakthrough teenager and pundits back then would have been surprised to hear the German has only reached one Grand Slam final by 2022, let alone not win one. Zverev won the first two meetings with Alcaraz in straight sets last season at the Vienna Open and Mexican Open, both of which he went on to win, but Alcaraz’ stunning performance in the Madrid Open final looked like a tide being turned in more ways than one. The Spaniard could take this in straight sets but the outright pick is the sensible call.
