THE PREDICTION

World number 105 Albert Ramos-Vinolas has been a mainstay threat at clay tournaments for the majority of his long career, winning four ATP titles on his favoured surface, but the 36-year-old appears to be winding down these days. To three-set victories over old foes Diego Schwartzman and Roberto Bautista Agut in qualifying, however, set the Spaniard up for what could be his last appearance at the Madrid Masters and he will be desperate to give a partisan home support something to cheer.

World number 72 Pavel Kotov is a solid threat across surfaces but he brings a two-match losing streak on clay after a three-set exit to Sebastian Ofner in Barcelona last week. The 25-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Marrakech Open before that, losing out to defending champion Roberto Carballes Baena, to suggest this first encounter with an ailing Ramos-Vinolas is his to lose but back the Spaniard to earn at least a set with home advantage firmly in his corner.

TIP: ALBERT-RAMOS VINOLAS TO WIN A SET
