World number 76 Facundo Bagnis is a clay-court player by trade but the Argentine reached the third round of the US Open last season before losing in four sets to Botic van de Zandschulp. The 31-year-old should not be underestimated, then, against current world number 134 Andy Murray, although the Brit’s recent defeat of Rafael Nadal at the Mubadala Tennis World Championship exhibition is a working level above his first opponent of 2022. 34-year-old Murray worked his way back to a top 40 level at the end of last season and it remains to be seen how much further he can go this year. The former world number one should be able to beat Bagnis in straight sets but an outright win is the sensible move in his first match of a season full of tentative promise.
