THE PREDICTION
25-year-old Veronika Kudermetova is up to a career-high ninth in the WTA world rankings after enjoying an incredibly consistent season last year but the Russian needs to find more grit at the business end of tournaments. Kudermetova blasted past Amanda Anisimova and Bianca Andreescu at Adelaide 1 last week before a straight-sets defeat to Irina-Camelia Begu in the quarter-finals and whilst losing to the Romanian is no embarrassment, there is certainly a pattern she needs to address as she finished runner-up in all three of her finals last season. A comeback victory over Victoria Azarenka on Tuesday is a strong reaction, and always an impressive result, but it is often in matches like her next against fellow Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova – whom she will be expected to beat – that she struggles. World number 20 Alexandrova is in many ways the antithesis here with two titles won from two finals played last season, including October’s Korea Open.
Alexandrova beat Kudermetova in straight sets in the semi-finals of ‘s-Hertogenbosch en-route to her first title of 2022 but Kudermetova leads their head-to-head record 2-1 as things stand. This looks the toughest call of an exceptional round of 16 in Adelaide so avoid picking a winner by backing Kudermetova to earn at least a set.
