THE LOWDOWN

STEFANOS TSITSIPAS

Stefanos Tsitsipas rose to a career-high world number four after finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Roland-Garros, his first Grand Slam final. 22-year-old Tsitsipas has the most wins on tour this season with a 39-9 record, six more than next-highest Andrey Rublev. The Greek enjoyed an excellent season on the clay swing winning his first Masters title in Monte-Carlo and also taking the Lyon Open title. Tsitsipas’ biggest success to date is winning the ATP Finals in 2019 but the Monte-Carlo Open title seemed just as important to the Greek’s growth.

FRANCES TIAFOE

23-year-old Frances Tiafoe has slipped down the world rankings after reaching a career-high of 29 back in 2019. After winning at Nottingham on the ATP Challenger Tour before backing that up with a run to the quarter-finals at Queen’s, the American will fancy his chances of producing the quality he needs to have a decent tournament. He is 8-8 on grass in his ATP Tour career with three of those wins coming at Wimbledon, although he failed to make it beyond the first round last time out.

THE PREDICTION

There is little doubt that world number 56 Frances Tiafoe has plenty of success in his future but the American has fallen away from his potential slightly in recent years. Tiafoe has enjoyed a strong build-up to Wimbledon, though, and he will be a really dangerous first opponent for Stefanos Tsitsipas here. Tsitsipas has been the most in-form player on tour this season not called Novak Djokovic and he will have the mental strength to overcome the disappointment from his loss to the Serb in Paris last time out. The world number four is certainly the favourite to come through this first round match but take him as outright winner here. Tiafoe is tough and well capable of taking a set over this longer best of five format.
