THE LOWDOWN

16th seed Cristian Garin was in a proper tussle with Norbert Gombos in the first round of the US Open but the Chilean came through in four sets. The world number 19 has a way to go emulate his excellent Grand Slam finishes this season, with defeats to Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic taking him out of the round of 16 at both Roland-Garros and Wimbledon. Henri Laaksonen was enjoying an excellent campaign at Roland-Garros too before injury saw him withdraw from the third round. The Swiss played brilliantly to oust John Millman in straight sets on Monday.

THE PREDICTION

World number 130 Henri Laaksonen beat Roberto Bautista Agut at Roland-Garros back in June for one of his best ever wins on tour before injury spoiled his fun. The Swiss came back with a vengeance on Monday to beat a tough opening draw in John Millman and Cristian Garin will have to improve if he is to see the third round based on both players’ opening matches. 25-year-old Garin was the winner of their only previous encounter at the Houston Open on clay back in 2019 but taking Laaksonen to win at least two sets here looks a decent option with the sense of an upset in the air.
