THE LOWDOWN

PAULA BADOSA

23-year-old Paula Badosa came to the fore earlier this season with a stunning run to the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters where she lost to Ash Barty two weeks after beating the Aussie at the Charleston Open. The Spaniard took that Madrid form straight into the Serbia Ladies Open where she won her first WTA title and then she reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros for her best Grand Slam showing.

ALISON VAN UYTVANCK

27-year-old Alison Van Uytvanck reached a career-high 37th in the WTA world rankings back in 2018 where she won one of her four WTA titles and reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon. A surprising run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in 2015 remains her best showing at a Grand Slam.

THE PREDICTION

Van Uytvanck was the winner of their only previous encounter in two tiebreaks back in 2019 at the Karlsruhe Open but Badosa’s form has only really manifested this season. The Spaniard is most comfortable on the clay but she was vastly impressive at Wimbledon on grass she will not have experience all that much and her performances this season suggest she can target the second week once again. Van Uytvanck is rarely beaten easily but a gulf in quality should eventually tell here. Take Badosa to win in outright here.
