THE PREDICTION

World number 17 Grigor Dimitrov has muscled past two baseline battlers in Jan-Lennard Struff and Jeremy Chardy without dropping a set to reach the round of 16 of the Monte-Carlo Masters but he has drawn the last player here he would want to face. World number three Rafael Nadal is aiming to win his 11th Monte-Carlo Masters title this week and holds a comprehensive 13-1 head-to-head record over Dimitrov, with the Bulgarian’s only won coming at the height of his powers back in 2016. 34-year-old Nadal conceded just three games to Federico Delbonis on Wednesday but it was a match with some pretty interesting battles and Dimitrov will be a little more confident of forcing a third set after watching that. However, this was Nadal’s first match back for almost two months after losing in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open to Stefanos Tsitsipas and the Spaniard will amp up his game to face the former world number three. Nadal is relentless in these tournaments up to the very latter stages and Dimitrov is unlikely to be able to maintain a strong performance long enough to take a set here so pick the world number three to take this in two.
