American qualifier Bjorn Fratangelo played confidently in a straight-sets victory over Fernando Verdasco on Thursday in just his third tour-level match of the season after reaching the round of 16 at the Delray Beach Open. The Florida native should garner some support from a limited home crowd in this second round match but the Miami Open crowds have yet to really thicken into more than a smattering and “home advantage” is yet to truly be felt. World number 34 Lorenzo Sonego is a whole 10 places higher in the seeds after so many drop-outs and the Italian could really do with a strong run this week after some middling displays this season. Whilst world number 233 Fratangelo should be a handful throughout, the gulf in quality here will likely tell in the key moments and Sonego should be taking this second round match in straight sets.
